Argentina, the world’s fifth-largest wine producer
In 2024, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) Argentina was the world’s fifth-largest wine producer.
That year, the country produced approximately 1.08 billion liters of wine (287 million US gallons) and cultivated nearly 200,000 hectares (about 495,000 acres) of vineyards —70% of which are located in Mendoza.
The grape harvest reached 1.9 million metric tons (close to 4.2 billion pounds). Wine and must production came to 1.43 billion liters (roughly 376.5 million US gallons), marking a 32.8% increase compared to 2023.

The wine industry is a cornerstone of Mendoza’s economy, accounting for 41% of the province’s total exports, which reached USD 733 million FOB in 2024.*

Top grape varieties in Mendoza
Among Argentina’s many grape varieties, Malbec stands out as the country’s signature grape. It has flourished in Mendoza’s exceptional growing conditions, producing wines of outstanding quality.
In 2024, Malbec covered 39,856.4 hectares in Mendoza, representing 27.9% of the province’s cultivated vineyard area.
Other prominent cultivars include Bonarda (9.8%), Cereza (8.9%), Criolla Grande (7.9%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (6.9%) (INV, 2025).
